BLACK ELK’S
VISION In 1873, a nine-year-old Lakota (Sioux) boy experienced a powerful vision near the top of Pikes Peak. He was taken through a rainbow door and into a cloud tipi where he encountered six venerable grandfathers. They showed him the future of his people and of the world. When he was an old man, Black Elk shared this vision with the poet and author, John Neihardt, who then wrote Black Elk Speaks (Simon & Schuster,1972). The full transcripts of Black Elk’s vision were later published in The Sixth Grandfather (edited by Raymond De Mallie, University of Nebraska, 1985). In the original transcripts, Black Elk makes it quite clear that his great vision occurred on Pikes Peak. Within this vision, warriors come from the Peak to bring transformation to the world. This is of special significance because the World Council of Elders is headquartered on the Pikes Peak massif. |
